For any job that involves handling refrigerant — residential, commercial, or refrigeration — employers want Universal. Core alone is not a standalone certification; it is the written prerequisite you pass before taking the Type tests.
For commercial work and brand-name residential employers (Carrier, Trane, Lennox dealers), NATE is a real differentiator. For small residential shops, it matters less than hands-on experience — but it still signals you can pass a technical exam.
A2L refrigerants are mildly flammable (Class 2L under ASHRAE 34), which means you need leak detection in confined spaces and must follow OEM-specific service procedures. Recovery and charging are similar to R-410A, but the tools and safety steps are stricter.
Most states license HVAC contractors (the business entity), not individual technicians. However, about 30 states require individual technician or journeyman licenses — requirements vary from passing an exam to logging supervised hours to both.
Commercial technicians typically earn $8,000–$15,000/year more than residential at the journeyman level, but the gap is smaller at entry level and larger at senior/master level. The tradeoff is a steeper learning curve and more travel.

Apprenticeships pay you while you learn and usually lead directly to a job offer. Trade school is faster to complete but costs $8,000–$20,000 and you graduate without the guaranteed position. Either path works — it depends on your financial situation and timeline.
Brand matters for dealer work because dealers are exclusive or preferred installers for that manufacturer. For service tech work, the skill transfers across brands — refrigeration cycle is refrigeration cycle. Knowing one brand's controls deeply is more valuable than shallow familiarity with all of them.
Expect to own your basic hand tools, manifold gauges, and a multimeter. Expect the company to provide the truck, recovery machine, vacuum pump, nitrogen cylinders, and specialty diagnostic equipment. Anything over $500 is usually company-provided.
The transition requires picking up commercial-specific skills — most importantly: controls/DDC, 3-phase electrical, and chiller or AHU service. Most techs bridge through light commercial (small office RTUs) first rather than jumping straight to chiller plants.
Flat-rate pay means you earn based on jobs completed, not hours worked — fast techs earn more, slow ones earn less. Overtime is time-and-a-half after 40 hours. For experienced residential service techs who work quickly, flat-rate can significantly outpace hourly. For new techs, hourly is safer.
Most techs pass the Universal exam after 8–15 hours of study using free practice tests from HVAC School or ESCO Institute. Testing is available at trade schools, HVAC suppliers like Ferguson and Johnstone, and through online proctoring services for around $20.
Residential service companies typically run on-call rotations where techs are on the call schedule 1–2 weeks per month. Summer peak season (June–August) and winter peak (December–February) mean more after-hours calls and more pay — this is where annual income is made.
OSHA 10 is the baseline for most construction-adjacent HVAC work and takes 10 hours to complete. OSHA 30 is required for supervisor roles and many commercial/union jobs, and takes 30 hours. Neither is federally mandated for HVAC specifically, but many employers and job sites require one.
