HVAC Certification Guide
EPA 608 Type I certification covers refrigerant handling on small appliances — equipment containing five pounds or fewer of refrigerant in a hermetically sealed system. This includes window AC units, PTAC (packaged terminal air conditioners), residential refrigerators, small reach-in coolers, and vending machines. Type I alone does not qualify a technician for full HVAC service work; most employers require Type II or Universal alongside it.
Type I is most often listed by employers in light commercial service, property management maintenance, or appliance repair. Contractors running residential HVAC service will generally require Universal instead, since Type I does not cover the split systems and heat pumps that make up the bulk of residential service calls.
