EPA 608 Type II certification covers high-pressure refrigerant systems — the equipment category that defines most residential and light commercial HVAC work. This includes split-system air conditioners, packaged rooftop units, heat pumps, and most commercial systems using R-410A or A2L refrigerants. It is the most common type-specific card listed by contractors who have not yet mandated Universal.
Type II is the most relevant type-specific card for residential HVAC because it covers the systems technicians touch most often. Employers listing Type II (rather than Universal) are typically smaller residential contractors or those hiring technicians in a single equipment category. The practical advice for technicians: if you hold Type II, completing Universal adds only the Type I and III sections — most training programs recommend completing all three.
